Thousands of People on Road on Paris for Anti-Gay marriage protest

Parts of central Paris have been brought to a standstill as hundreds of thousands of people demonstrated against gay marriage and adoption.
Three columns of protesters, waving pink and blue flags showing a father, mother and two children, converged on the Eiffel Tower from different meeting points in Paris.
Many came after long train and bus rides from the provinces.
Organizers insist they are not against gays and lesbians but for the rights of children to have a father and mother.
Slogans on the posters and banners approved by the organisers included "marriagophile, not homophobe," "all born of a father and mother" and "paternity, maternity, equality".
Organisers claimed 1 million people had protested, while police put the number at 340,000 - high even in protest-prone France.
Patrice de Beer, a political analyst and former editor of Le Monde, observed one part of the demonstrations at close hand.
"They've been around here for three or four hours. It was very, very noisy," she said.
"This demonstration - organised by the conservative parties and the churches - is strongly against this bill.
"The main slogan I could hear from here is 'Hollande, the French president, you can stick this reform in your bottom'."
At the protest, a comedian with the stage name of Frigide Barjot called on the president to abandon his plans, noting the diversity of the crowd in opposition.
She said those against gay marriage are multicultural, multi-religious, multi-philosophical and multi-sexual.
Contentious issue
The legislative change, due this year, has become an unexpectedly contentious issue for president Francois Hollande in a country that introduced civil unions about a decade ago.
His opponents' campaign has dented public support and forced deputies to put off a plan to allow lesbian couples access to artificial insemination.
An opinion poll of almost 1,000 people, published at the weekend, suggested 56 per cent of France supports gay marriage, down on previous polls, and 50 per cent disapprove of gay adoption.
Nevertheless, de Beer does not believe the protests will be enough to make the president to back down.
"They represent a very active but small minority within the French population, which in its majority is in favour of what is called here wedding for all - which is in fact wedding for gay couples," she said.
"I don't think that President Hollande is going to change his line anyway.
"He has been in favour of this reform.
"It was one of his popular promises during his election campaign and for him it would be impossible to backtrack on this reform which is accepted by a majority of the French people.
"He would lose face right in the middle of economic and social reforms that he is trying to implement.
"He just can't afford backtracking."

Kamal Hassan's Vishwaroopam expected to earn 175 crores via digital release

Kamal Hassan’s Vishwaroopam that is set to get released over six digital television platforms all across the nation and outside is estimating to earn more than 175 crore with one viewing all across the cable platforms.

The star and co-producer of the film, Kamal Hassan has set up the goal post with each of the films that he has released, but with Vishwaroopam that is going to release just a week from now on the occasion of Pongal, he is going to redefine the paradigm of cinema viewing.

Source says, “Vishwaroopam is targeting 5% of the 50 million digital cable subscribers in the country at present, and is expected to garner more than 175 crore from this new innovative business model that Kamal Hassan has put in place. For the Tamil viewing a viewer would be charged Rs. 1000 while for Hindi viewing he would have to shell out Rs. 500. With the advent of multiplexes in India an average movie viewing outing for a family costs minimum of Rs. 1000, and to add to it the pain of traveling to the cinema halls to view a movie.”

“If one is able to view the movie within the cozy ambience of his or her home on the day the movie is being released most of the fans would try to exercise this option, and this is the segment that Kamal Hassan is trying to target. Well, the multiplex owners, obviously would not be happy at all with this initiative as it is the first three days after a film releases that determines the success of the film, and Vishwaroopam releasing on the eve of Pongal could further compound the problems for them,” Source added further.

The film is slated to hit the theater on 11 January 2013, the same day when Vishal Bhardwaj’s big venture Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola starring Imran Khan and Anushka Sharma is releasing in northern states.

YouTube may be unblocked in two to three weeks

The internet giant blocked access to the blasphemous video in Libya, Egypt, Indonesia, Malaysia and India, but it didn’t block the video in Pakistan.

KARACHI: Pakistan Telecommunication Authority is once again in talks with Google to unblock video sharing site YouTube.
“PTA hopes to unblock YouTube in two to three weeks,” PTA Chairman Farooq Awan told The Express Tribune on Thursday, adding they were in talks with the internet giant.

On September 17, PTA blocked the video sharing website to restrict access to an anti-Islamic video that sparked riots in many Muslim countries.

The internet giant blocked access to the blasphemous video in Libya, Egypt, Indonesia, Malaysia and India, but it didn’t block the video in Pakistan. The government, therefore, directed internet service providers (ISPs) to block the entire site.

The Express Tribune has already reported that PTA has received a directive from the Ministry of Interior with several instructions about unblocking of YouTube, permanent blocking of unregistered SIMs, Mobile Number Portability (MNP) and automated web locking.

The ministry, in its directive, told PTA to restore the video sharing site and manually block blasphemous content using

PTA’s system, according to a source familiar with the matter.
However, PTA doesn’t have any system to manually block thousands of links leading to the anti-Islamic video. It has to be done through ISPs, which is virtually impossible as this will require a huge amount of time and effort.

As seeen on The Express Tribune, November 16th, 2012.

Problems of Ordinary Man

Nearly 20 million people live in mega city Karachi. At an average an adult travels more than 25 kilometers a day. Which includes students, factory workers, white collar employees, executives, sales persons, and marketing persons. They have to travel long distances twice a day. Since the normal working hours stretch from 9.00am to 6.00pm, and public transports are usually overloaded and roads are jammed during peak traffic hours. In the absence of decent public transport systems millions of people are forced to use their own motorcycles and cars, which is the main cause of huge oil import bill and growing use of CNG.

Around the world provision of public transport is the responsibility of government. If any government does not wish to get involved, it offers incentives to the private sector. As against this public transport in general and in Karachi in particular is highly insufficient and dilapidated vehicles can be seen plying on the roads, which are also overloaded. Therefore, the individuals are forced to use personal transport i.e. motorcycles and cars. Besides, hundreds of contract carriers operate in the city carrying commuters to their destinations.

Therefore, the individuals are forced to use personal transport i.e. motorcycles and cars. Besides, hundred of contract carriers operate in the city carrying commuters to their destinations.
To begin with, disallowing use of CNG in vehicles will add to oil import bill. However, the point to remember is that CNG stations use less than 10% of total gas consumed in the country. Therefore, permanent ban on use of CNG would hardly make any difference. Even larger quantities can be saved by containing gas pilferage estimated around 300mmcfd which is almost close to total gas being supplied to fertilizer plants by SNGPL.

It is necessary to remind the policy planners that all sectors except power plants are a major source of cash for gas marketing companies. Reportedly, KESC alone owes around Rs35 billion to SSGC. While there are huge payables KESC also fails in paying current bills. Therefore, asking SSGC to continue to supply gas to KESC is a zero sum game. Another point of concern is that KESC is adding around 600MW generation capacity which can only be run on gas. There is also a general impression that KESC has refused to operate its power plants on furnace oil and as and when its gas supply goes down it immediately resort to load shedding.

During recent closure of CNG stations in Karachi it became evident that over the years more than 70% of mini buses and also a substantial percentage of buses have installed CNG kits. Another problem is that like passenger cars these vehicles can't operate on diesel as well as CNG, once converted to CNG these vehicles can't be operated on diesel. Over the years operators of public transport have been ripping off passengers, as fares were set on the basis diesel price but vehicles were actually operated on CNG. A surprising point is that the authorities responsible for issuing 'fitness certificates' also didn't bother to inform the concerned authorities about gradual switch over of public transport to CNG from diesel.

Crude oil price is likely to hover above US$100/barrel in medium to long term. Therefore, if the government is serious in containing use on CNG, efforts have to be made to use bio-fuel (alcohol blended in motor gasoline and canola/corn oil added in diesel). Since alcohol and canola/corn fall under the category of 'indigenous and renewable sources of energy' their use will not add to the import bill of Pakistan. In fact the added advantage will be an increase in the production of sugarcane, canola and corn.

It is believed that 'oil import lobby' is the biggest opponent of introduction of bio-fuels in Pakistan. It is being said that use of bio-fuels will inflate prices of sugar and edible oil in the country, which is totally incorrect. Till today canola and corn oils can't be added to diesel because of being more expensive. Therefore, production and yield per acre of canola/corn seeds have to be increased significantly to bring down prices of these oils.

However, to begin with government should focus on production/sale of E-10 (motor gasoline containing 10% alcohol). Almost all the sugar mills have attached distilleries which can deliver the required quantity of alcohol as bulk of molasses (basic raw material for producing alcohol) is being exported. The added advantage is that no alteration has to be made in the carburetors of cars for using E-10.

No SIMs to be sold at outlets from Nov 30, 2012

Cellular service providers to block 5% of unregistered SIMs per week. PHOTO: FILE

Karachi: Cellular service providers will not be allowed to sell new SIMs through franchises, customer service centres or retailers from November 30, states an official notification sent by the Pakistan Telecom Authority (PTA) to telecom operators on Tuesday.

Service providers will also have to verify all unregistered SIMs by December 12. Unregistered ones will be blocked permanently using a 5% illegal SIMs per week formula, it adds.

PTA has also asked service providers to block the entire stock of SIMs available in the market so no SIMs can be purchased from outlets starting December 1.

Sources said the interior ministry had issued some important directives to PTA regarding unregistered SIMs, which pose a great threat to national security.

They added that a high-level meeting was held at the PTA headquarters to communicate the aforesaid directions to operators, following which a notification was issued.

The telecom authority has asked cellular service providers to verify all SIMs by December 12, and issue a duly signed certificate stating that all credentials are 100% accurate by December 15. The credentials will be tallied with information available with the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA).

According to the PTA’s notification, new SIMs can only be issued against two documents: the customer’s computerised national identity card (CNIC) or his/her driving licence.

Service providers will have to send the new SIM to the customer’s authorised residential address and maintain a proper record of SIMs issued, sold and retrieved. The rider delivering SIMs has to ensure the person who applied for the same personally receives it, that too after verifying the CNIC and signing the receiving confirmation.

As per the Supreme Court’s orders, no more than five SIMs – whether from one or more service providers – can be issued against a single CNIC. The choice to retain a particular number will rest with the customer, added the PTA notification.

A source said the interior ministry has asked PTA to unblock YouTube and manually block any blasphemous content. He, however, did not say when the decision is expected to be implemented.
